St Therese Primary School of New Amsterdam won the second Annual Republic Bank-sponsored Inter Primary school Spelling Bee Mashramani competition. The event was held on Monday in the Boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council in New Amsterdam.
The competition targeted Grade Six students from schools within the four clusters throughout Region Six.
Before reaching the final stage the schools were involved in preliminary rounds in their various clusters. The semi finalists were Auchlyne Primary and Massiah Primary from Corentyne, St Therese Primary from New Amsterdam and Cumberland Primary of East Canje.
The competition was closely contested and in the end St Therese Primary came out the winner and was awarded cash incentives and the Republic Bank Spelling Bee trophy. The first and second runners up schools also received trophies and cash incentive, all compliments of Republic Bank.
Officer in Charge of the Republic Bank- New Amsterdam, Imran Saccoor, speaking at the presentation ceremony, stated that the Bank over the years has supported the call to empower young people.
He said that when the Region announced plans for the Spelling B Competition, the Bank found it fitting and appropriate to be associated with such an activity. It undertook exclusive sponsorship.
He stated that the Bank over the years has expended in education and sports for children by sponsoring programmes such as the Republic Right Start, Pan Miners Workshop, the Youth Link Apprenticeship Programme and the Republic Bank Under-15 Cricket competition.
The manager urged all students to take education seriously since an educated mind βcan help you to achieve anything they want in life.β
Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha urged other corporate businesses to emulate Republic Bank and to come forward and be on board.
