Presents Boxing Gear, Basketball equipment among others

Overseas based Guyanese Kirk Rodrigues, a regular donor, recently presented number of sports Gear to the New Amsterdam Central Police Station Youth and Sport Club. The equipment includes Boxing gear, basketball equipment and some other materials. The Equipment was presented to Coordinator of the Programme, Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan at a simple ceremony held in Georgetown recently.

 

Mr Rodrigues, who now resides in Brooklyn in the USA, has been assisting the Police with their community, Youth and other outreach programmes for a number of years and has pledged to up his assistance in a number of ways.

Inspector Ramlakhan is the Operational Officer of Number one division of the Police B division and the Coordinator and the point man of the Central Police Station outreach programme, which over the years has made a drastic transformation among many youths in the Berbice area with his many initiatives and programmes.

Among the initiatives undertaken includes the reformation of a number of Police Operation Youth Clubs and Scouts Groups in the sub division, the Formation of The Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, while successfully staging Domino, Boxing, cricket and other Competitions among, the cops, the army, the Fire and Prison services, the New Amsterdam Constabulary, University of Guyana, Neighborhood police and civilians. Another achievement is the staging of the Annual 20/20 cricket match between Police, Fire Service and the Police Operation Youth Club.

A number of other sporting activities were organized including cycling, athletics, volleyball, football. While community walkabout, visits and adoption of depressed communities were also undertaken. The Police have also established fruitful arrangements involving the University of Guyana Berbice Campus, the New Amsterdam Technical Institute among others.
A Gym area and playfield was also commissioned during the year at the Central Police Station compound in New Amsterdam. The facility is being used by police, soldiers and civilians. A number of indoor and as well as outdoor games were played at the facilities including volleyball, basketball, small goal football, cricket and boxing and the Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym is located at facility. The Police recreational hall on the middle flat of the Central Police Station was also renovated and was fitted with a television, tables and chalk board.

The facility is now used for indoor sports including Table Tennis, Dominoes and Whist among other indoor sports and lectures. The force has recently undertaken initiatives to enhance their image and make life better for those in its employ in addition to the police community relationships amidst the negatives the police have been enduring over the years. With good intent and a few good men, much could be achieved and that the story with the Central Police Station Operational Outreach programme in particular. Inspector Ramlakhan is being able assisted by Station Sergeant of the Central Police Station Michael Newland and Corporal Hamilton of the Reliance Police Station among others. (Samuel Whyte)
