He came into the country with no fanfare last week, but as of Tuesday December 7, there is a new Justice of the Supreme Court. 67-year-old newly appointed judge, Denis S. Hanomansingh, of Guyana who celebrated his 67th birthday in Belize on Monday December 6 was sworn into office at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, in the chambers of the newly appointed Chief Justice Samuel Awich.

Present at the swearing in was the Registrar, Velda Flowers, and three prominent judges of Supreme Court, Justice Oswell Legall, Justice Adolph Lucas and Justice John Muria. Justice Denis Stanley Hanomansingh was born in New Amsterdam Berbice, Guyana.

He is the youngest of four children for his parents. In 1967, he graduated from the Queen University, Ireland with a degree in Bachelors of Law. In 1971, he did the English examination in London and in 1993, he sat the bar examine in New York.

His last post was at the Attorney General’s office in Barbados about a year ago where he worked as the principal Crown Council. Justice Hamomansingh is scheduled to commence work as a judge in the Northern Session of the Supreme Court in Corozal where Justice Herbert Lord is presently presiding over.

While no one was able to say when exactly he begins to serve as a judge in the Belize judiciary, we understand it could be as early as next week. According to Velda Flowers, the Supreme Court Registrar, Hanomansingh was signed on a six month contract in Belize effective last week Wednesday, December 1.
