…as Town celebrates 120th anniversary
New Amsterdam Town Week 2011 is being held this year under the theme “Sustaining a Healthy Community with Citizen’s participation.” This is the eleventh year that the celebrations are being held and a number of activities have been planned to highlight the celebrations, which will see most of the activities fitted into a one-week period for the New Amsterdam Town week that highlights the 120th anniversary of the town..
The week of activities will kick off today with a March Past and Opening Ceremony at Main and New Streets, a parade around the town and a Cultural Presentation.

The Parade which will be led by the newly formed Corps of Drums and Brass begins at 15:00 hrs from in front of the New Amsterdam Secondary School. A march past will be taken at the junction of Main and St John Street.
Tomorrow there is a domino competition at the New Amsterdam Town Hall. Tuesday is set aside as Senior Citizens day. Where senior Citizens will be pampered and treated at the Penguin International Hotel. Wednesday will be the finals of the Spelling B Competition involving Primary Schools in the town. The Day is also set aside for the Medical Outreach at the New Amsterdam Lion’s Den. On Thursday there will be a one day net ball competition at the New Amsterdam Basketball court.
Lots of activities slated for Friday. A Carrier day will be held at the New Amsterdam Town Hall while the Town Council and other stake holders will participate in the renaming of Lot 39 Stanleytown.
Back at the New Amsterdam Town in observance of this year as International Year of people Of African Descent, an African Fashion display, Poetry and Drumming will be held.
The Town Week of activities will culminate with the much anticipated Street Fair and Exhibition on Saturday.
The Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) is expected to play a meaningful role in the town week activities this year.
The Chamber has been coordinating its members and other private business persons to be apart of the days activities for the Street fair. Booths will be set up at various points where the chamber its members and other private business entities will be displaying their products.
Business entities will also be cleaning the areas in their surroundings, panting some road signs and Pedestrian crossings light post and other heritage markings and monuments and historical markings, while they will also be decorating the surroundings with flags and buntings with flags.
Plans are also on stream to erect an arch at a strategic point of the town to welcome visitors to the New Amsterdam Town Day.
Many businesses have special promotions and giveaways during the week of celebrations.
The Republic Bank New Amsterdam Branch has also launched a special Town Week Loan Promotion.
New Amsterdam is also celebration its 120 Anniversary.
