Digicel Guyana Limited has joined hands with the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council in rehabilitating the once defunct Kiddies Play Park which is situated at Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam. The telephone giants provided most of the funding to get the $4M recreational facility back in operation.
The facility known as the Esplanade Kiddies Park, which was recently completed, was officially handed over to the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town council on Friday last.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, head of Customer Care Sherwin Osborne stated that what was done is all part of the company’s cooperative responsibility. He said that part of the company’s objectives is to target communities with the objective of doing development that will benefit the entire community. He also stated that the company cannot do it alone and welcomed others to come on board. He promised to continue supporting New Amsterdam.
Mayor of New Amsterdam, Claude Henry, in his speech thanked Digicel for coming on board and help salvage the facility which had become defunct. He was also high in praise for Courts Guyana Limited who helped to sponsor the initial Kiddies Park. He stated that, “This is Kiddies Corner number two, because we had a number one that was given to us by Courts Guyana Limited. However that went out of use after some time and the equipment became unusable. Digicel the good friend they are came on board and after some negotiations we signed a Memorandum of Understanding to have work done on the Kiddies Corner in New Amsterdam, and here we are today with a new facility.”
The Mayor stated that there were some setbacks with the project. He said that, “This area is an area where the slaves use to be and cook and so forth and it was quite a task to get it looking the way it is today.”
Councilor and head of the Parks and Playfield Committee Winifred Haywood echoed similar sentiments as the Mayor and thanked the telephone company for coming on board to help with beautifying the town and make facilities available to help Berbicians and specifically those from New Amsterdam have somewhere go and relax.
She urged residents to take good care of the facilities and to report anyone who is seen damaging the structure and noted that the Parks and Playfield Committee will do its best in maintaining the facilities in the best of condition.
The facility is made up of Slides, Swings, See Saw and other amenities.
