Pupils from several nursery schools in New Amsterdam took the town by storm on Thursday when the Education Ministry held its Mashramani Kidde’s Street Parade. “Man dem lil children could wuk up,” one onlooker said.
The children displayed costumes that were designed to take part in the regional competition. The children were brought onto the streets to allow a wider cross-section of persons an opportunity to witness the creativity of teachers and young minds. With music supplied by a local church band, many of the children delivered performances that signalled to the hundreds of onlookers of what to expect on Saturday in New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, some of the schools are making arrangements to be back on the road in New Amsterdam on Saturday while one teacher says that she will ask parents to have the children again on March 3 when the big companies will bring their floats from Georgetown to Mash in Berbice. As Mash activities continue in New Amsterdam, the local committee will be holding its “Ole Kai Night”. This will see groups from around the town clad in raggedy outfits and masks, competing in a folk music dance-off. The event is set for the Matthew Allen Stelling Road and billed to commence at 19:00h.
The “Mash Overload” costume parade and road tramp will be held on Saturday. That starts at Marks Bridge and revellers will tramp through the town, ending at Matthew Allen Road for the wash down.
Several churches are expected to join the parade, but will be jumping up only to gospel music. That is according to organisers. The churches are expected to be physically supported with assistance from Trinidad, Barbados, the United States and the “Body of Christ”, out of West Demerara, which has been in Mash action for the past six years.
