Organizing the New Amsterdam Band Corps was a significant undertaking for COFONA Inc. The endeavor began when several of COFONA’s members – and former members of the Berbice Junior Band – including Keith London, Neil McAlmont, Haydock Giddings, and Alfred Bradshaw, donated a set of instruments including drums, bugles, cornets, trumpets, and drumsticks to form the band. It adopted the name New Amsterdam Band Corps. The band now accommodates twenty four youths, with others in waiting. Led by Mr. Lincoln Williams (Polo), the young band members have practiced assiduously after school in preparation for public performances. These performances have already made the band a welcome part of the New Amsterdam community. As the youths demonstrate their musical talents their performance attracts the attention of admiring residents. To help support and expand these efforts, a New Amsterdam Band Corps Fund has started and individuals could make donations of cash and/or musical instruments to the band.
