The Council of Friends of New Amsterdam (COFONA) Group will be sponsoring a cycle road race set for Sunday August 11 in observance of Emancipation. The event which has been organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) is open to all Berbicians.
The 45-mile event, which is being coordinated by Cycling Coach Randolph Roberts, is expected to pedal off at 09:00hrs from the New Amsterdam Municipal Market proceed to the No. 43 Bridge before returning to Main and Alexander Street for the finish.
Cyclists from the two Berbice clubs, FACC and Trojan Cycling Club, are expected to battle it out again in what is expected to be an intriguing affair as the riders aim for individual and club glory as the best in the Ancient County.
Prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers overall and the top three juniors while there will be eight sprint prizes up for grabs. Top Berbice cyclists, Neil Reece, Elijah Brijjader, Dwight Holder, Ray Millington, Syborne Fernandes, Crawford Brothers, Gary Benjamin, Brian Harris, Audrel Ross and Triston Kamal among others are expected to be on the saddle for the day’s activity.
COFONA, which is an overseas based Guyanese Group with chapters both overseas and locally, continues to contribute to the development of their home town. It was formed in New York and is made up of former New Amsterdam residents.
The group is headed by educator, Doctor Leonard Lewis. The local chapter is led by Mrs. Marcy Williams.
The group which has a number of other activities organised to celebrate Emancipation, is hosting activities under the theme: ‘From Resistance through Emancipation, towards Empowerment’.
