All arrangements are in place for the first game in the Central Police Operational Youth Club (CPOYC) outdoor sports programme for the 2011 season.
That encounter will be a return 20/20 softball cricket match between the host team CPOYC and the Guyana Fire Service Berbice operation set for today at the Scott Church Ground at Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam, beginning at 09:00 hrs.
The last time the two teams met in June 2010 for the Republic Bank Trophy, the CPOYC team took the Fire out of the GFS contingent and came out winners and they will be looking for a repeat performance.
The GFS on the other hand has been hard at practice and are charged up and will be looking to wash their opponents away with a blazing performance.
In today’s game the winning team will collect $30,000 and the New Amsterdam Technical Institute Trophy, while the runner up will collect the Naz Internet Café trophy.
Trophies and other incentives will be presented to outstanding individuals including the MVP, best batsman, best bowler, best fielder, person hitting the most sixes, most improved player, the most spectacular performance for the day among others.
According to Coordinator Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan of the Central Police Station, other games will also be played. He said that they have decided to start their sports and community outreach programme early; following the successful year in 2010 they have decided to keep the momentum going so as to keep the interest.
Among those expected to be in attendance are Assistant Superintendent Rishi Dass who is the officer responsible for the outreach programme, members of the newly formed police youth club in Angoy’s Avenue and East Canje, children from the Berbice Anjuman orphanage and the Central Police Boxing Gym.
Some of the other donors are Accountant Clement De Nobrega and company, Sukhpaul Business Enterprise, Ashiek Motor Spares, Blue Ridge Cell phone store, Ramnarace Construction, Amerally sawmill, Sankar Snackette and Groceries, Tomar Duhraj and Yassin Construction.
According to Ramlakhan matches will be played mainly among the Joint Services organization in Berbice and a few civilian organizations.
