Racquet-wielders in the Ancient County of Berbice returned to competitive Table Tennis (TT) last Sunday when the Sub-Association for the sport in Berbice staged an eight-team tournament at the Skeldon Community Centre Pavilion.
The tournament, which was held under the auspices of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), saw the best players in Berbice in action. Four teams from New Amsterdam and four teams from Corriverton are involved in the ongoing competition that will continue this Sunday at the Blairmont Community Centre.

The teams comprised two and three players each and were divided into two groups, with the winner and runner-up of each group advancing to the semifinals. The tournament is also being used as a yardstick for the second annual Berbice Open, which is expected to be bigger than last year.
Overseas-based Guyanese, Berbician, Souvenir Ramdyal of Queens New York, will sponsor the Berbice Open that will be held over two days this year with a number of overseas-based players expected to return to participate, according to the GTTA.
On Sunday, the second semi between New Amsterdam ‘A’ and New Amsterdam ‘C’ will be held to determine who plays Corriverton ‘A’ after they defeated New Amsterdam ‘B’ 3-0 in the other semi-final.
Preliminary results are as follows:
Group one: New Amsterdam ‘A’ (Richard Bacchus, Floyd Conway and Joshua Lalbachan) beat New Amsterdam ‘B’ (Nicholas Lawrence, Stephan Sankar and Jordan Conway) 3-2; Corriverton ‘C’ (Hamza Hussain, Shazaad and Symeon Matthew) 3-0 and Corriverton ‘D’ (Zackery Muhammed, Angeli Persaud and A. Edwin) 3-0.
New Amsterdam ‘B’ beat Corriverton ‘C’ and ‘D’ 3-0 for second place and third place went to Corriverton ‘C’ after they beat Corriverton ‘D’ 3-0.
Group two: Corriverton ‘A’ (Gibran Hussain and Sherwain Sahadeo) beat New Amsterdam ‘C’ (Tony Amerally, Levan Butchey and Ryan Anderson) 3-0; Corriverton ‘B’ (Omraj Singh, Terry Garnett and Kenneth Dhanai) 3-1 and New Amsterdam ‘D’ (Jason Sanmoogan, Rawle Mangra and Zahir Moakan) 3-0.
Second place went to New Amsterdam ‘C’ after they beat Corriverton ‘B’ 3-2; New Amsterdam ‘C 3-0. Third place went to Corriverton ‘B’ after they beat New Amsterdam 3-0. The event will conclude Sunday.
