Two primary schools in East Berbice are basking in their success following the recently released National Grade Six Examinations. The All Saints Primary School situated at Princess Elizabeth Road in New Amsterdam, has four students destined for the top schools in Guyana. They gained over 500 marks and thus were awarded places at the top schools in Guyana.
The students, Chantay Waithe, with 525 marks, was awarded a place at Bishops’ High School. She would like to become either a doctor or a teacher so that she could help people. She doesn’t like to see people suffer.
Shamal Beaton who scored 522 marks, was awarded a place at Saint Stanislaus College. Her ambition is to become a lawyer and his ultimate goal is to become a Judge.Akeasha Doodie with 517 marks will be attending St Rose’s High School. Shidon Whyte scored 510 marks and secured a place at the St Joseph High School. He has a few things lined up. He would like to become either a Scientist or pursue a career in journalism. He says that he also wants to be a singer.
Six students also gained places at the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary school while 10 will be attending the Berbice High School.
According to head mistress, Kowsilla Tahal, she was more than pleased with the results. Her school has been on the up over the past few years. What is more satisfying for her is that the school apart from performing well academically also did outstandingly in sports and other extra curricula activities, always placing in the top bracket. They also won the interschool athletics championships, interschool, football, cricket and second and third in the spelling B competition.
What was particular pleasing for Miss Tahal and the school was in most cases it was the same students who excel academically, it was they who also excel in the extracurricular arena.
The school performance enabled it to finish among the top school academically and in all-round performance in Region six. The Head Mistress was also high in praise for the support of parents, she particularly noted that the student who performed outstandingly were the one whose parents were always in support.
The school held its graduation ceremony, which was well attended on Thursday, in the school’s auditorium.
The students were addressed by Reverend Dr. Selby Ross of the All Saints Scot Church.The St Aloysius Primary School situated at Garrison Road in New Amsterdam also held a graduation ceremony to honour its top students. The school is sandwiched between the New Amsterdam Hospital, The New Amsterdam Technical Institute and the Berbice High School. Five students gained places among the top schools in Georgetown.
Head mistress Holace Swears was elated at the schools good performance among many odds. She was quick to point out that the top students of her school were all boys. She was also high in praise for her students who she said also performed creditable in extra curricula activities.
The headmistress was high in praise for her Grade Four class teachers, Raquel Saul and Darlene Grant, who she said did a splendid job to keep the school among the top performers in the region.
The top student of the school, Romeo Lynch, secured 529 marks. He is the only child for his parents and gained a place at the Bishops’ High School. He wants to become a Scientist. He drew a lot of inspiration from his mother who is a teacher at the said school.
Gerod Humphrey scored 521 marks and gained a place at the Saint Stanislaus College and has a few things lined up on what he would like to become.
David Ramchand wants to become a Doctor he came in with 509 and was awarded a place at the St Joseph High School while Nicolas Rampersaud with 505 marks was awarded a place at President’s College. He is a budding teacher. The lone female, Jamasie Albert, with 503 marks also got a place at President’s College.
She would like to become a doctor. All of the students would like to thank God, their parents, teachers, family, friends for their outstanding performance. They all said that they had to give a number of things coming down to crunch time for exams including watching Television, their cell phone, playing too many games among other things.
Some of the students were surprised at their good showing while a few were expecting to do well, as they were constant high performers. Not all of the students will be taking up their places in Georgetown, some because they do not have accommodation in the city, while others would prefer to stay in Berbice.
