Berbicians can expect a night of fistic fury when Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers and Jeff Roberts present the 5th edition of the annual Inter-Gym boxing tournament at the Scott School Ground, New Amsterdam on Saturday February 19.
Boxers would be drawn from the Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Bombers and the Lion Heart Boxing Gym in a 15 bout card that features such pugilists as Jamal Eastman, the young U-15 sensation from the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym, his gym mate, Joel and Richard Williamson, Kelsie George as well as Bowtar ‘Canjie Bad Man’ Seeraj and Riaz ‘The Real Coolie Bully’ David from Rose Hall. There will also be one female bout featuring Rena David.
Speaking with this publication yesterday afternoon, former local multiple champion Jeff Roberts said that several coaches are working assiduously to create the type of environment conducive to the development of the boxers. He said that the main aim of the team is to create gainful activity for the boxers so as to keep them out of trouble. “We are intent on taking the youngsters off the streets and the boxing gym provides just the type of activity that will keep them occupied,” noted Roberts.
Rogers then chimed in pointing to the many activities organized with the development of the youngsters in mind. “We have commenced literacy classes for the boxers on Mondays and Thursdays and we are already seeing changes in their behaviour,” said Rogers. He is appealing to corporate Guyana for assistance in the maintenance of this initiative as well as for the upcoming card.
Meanwhile, the organizers are grateful for the assistance received from corporate Berbice. Companies contributing to the card are Gordon’s Boutique and Stationery, Candy Shop in Pitt Street, RVC Private School, Mike’s Beverage, Republic Bank, New Building Society, Ansa McAl and A Ally and Sons. “The input of these companies is extremely important and I wish to urge others to come on board so that the young people in Berbice can benefit,” remarked Roberts.
