Associated Construction Service pumps in $500,000
The rapid development of Cricket in the Ancient County of Berbice continued over the past weekend with the launching of Under-23 male and female 40-overs tournaments both of which were unveiled on Saturday last at State House, New Amsterdam by the Berbice Cricket Board with sponsorship from Mr. Peter Lewis of Associated Construction Service.
BCB Special Events Committee Chairman Hilbert Foster disclosed that the joint sponsorship for the tournaments is $500,000 and play would start as soon as the weather improves.
The Under-23 tournament would be contested among the twelve first division clubs and would be used by the Junior Selection Committee to select the Berbice 2011 ‘A’ Team for tours to Demerara and Essequibo.
Players must be born on or after the September 1, 1988 in order to be eligible to play while the tournament would also serve as a nursery for the senior Berbice team. The defending champions are Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets.
The female tournament would be known as the Millie Lewis Memorial Competition which would be played in memory of the parent of Peter Lewis and would be played between Rose Hall Town Metro Female and a combined New Amsterdam/Canje team. They will play a two best in three series.
Foster described Peter Lewis as a dedicated Berbician who strongly believes in the investment and development of new and talented players in order to have a solid future.
Lewis in brief remarks noted that his support is a means of giving back to the County and its youths while he made a call for all involved to make both tournaments successful.
Meanwhile, the Berbice Cricket Board also used the opportunity to donate $100,000 worth of clothing to NGO Comforting Hearts in New Amsterdam to assist the entity in its outreach programme.
